Lazy Bones and the Happy Family

Once upon a time, there was a boy named LazyBones. LazyBones was like most other children. He liked to play games and ride his bike. He liked watching TV and playing video games. But LazyBones did not like doing chores. He did not like washing dishes or taking out the trash or cleaning his room or anything else that was too much like work.

LazyBones had come up with a way where he did not have to do as much work as the other children. When his mother would ask him to do a chore, LazyBones would cry and say that he didn’t want to. If she kept asking, he would stomp his foot and start to yell, ‘I won’t do it’.

As LazyBones got older he found that if he stayed grumpy, that mother wouldn’t even ask him to do chores. So he kept his grumpy face on all the time.

Then, something happened.

The night before LazyBone’s twelfth birthday, LazyBones fell asleep like he usually did, with a grumpy look on his face and in a dirty room. But as he slept that night, he had a dream. In his dream, he saw a kind and happy woman coming towards him. She reminded him of his great grandmother who had died a long time ago.

The kind and happy woman was walking toward him with a big smile on her face. She was carrying a stick. LazyBones thought that was weird. Why was she carrying a stick? She came to LazyBones and lifted the stick up in the air. Then she smacked LazyBones on the head with the stick. “Ow!” thought LazyBones. “Stop being lazy!” said the woman.

LazyBones rubbed his head and put on his grumpy face. “Smack!” the kind lady hit him again with the stick. “And stop making that grumpy face!” LazyBones stopped making the grumpy face. “Why do you keep smacking me with your stick?” asked LazyBones. “Because you’re lazy and grumpy and it’s making your home a grumpy, sad place instead of a happy place” said the kind woman with a pleasant smile on her face.

LazyBones thought of his mother doing all the chores while he would make grumpy faces. It was true that she looked sad sometimes. His sister would also put on her grumpy face when he made his grumpy face. Now that he thought about it, he was making the whole house grumpy and sad.

The kind woman said, “You’re making your whole house grumpy and sad”. “Hey, that’s just what I was thinking” said LazyBones. “Smack!” she hit him over the head with the stick again. “Then stop being lazy and grumpy!” she said. She smiled a big smile at him, and that was the end of the dream. It was morning.

LazyBones woke up and rubbed his head. It was just a dream, but his head still hurt. “I don’t want to have a grumpy and sad family” he thought to himself. So LazyBones made his bed. Then he cleaned his room. And the next time it was time to do dishes, he started helping without even being asked. He took out the trash and even helped his sister with her chores. His mother had a big smile on her face when LazyBones was helping and doing his chores.

“My home is a happier place when I’m not grumpy and lazy” thought LazyBones. And he was right.
