We Are the Lord’s Hands Here Upon the Earth
A recent message by President Monson caught my attention. It was titled, “Have I Done Any Good In The World Today?” In particular was the familiar comment, “We are the Lord’s hands here upon the earth”. As I thought about that phrase, I was impressed with the truth that as we serve others, we are doing the Lord’s work, in partnership with the Lord.
In John 17:21, Jesus prayed, “That they all may be one; as thou, Father, art in me, and I in thee, that they also may be one in us: that the world may believe that thou hast sent me.” As we serve others, our thoughts and actions are more easily influenced by the Holy Ghost and we become more as one with Jesus Christ and Heavenly Father.
President Monson recommended we take a step back from our daily routine and determine if we have taken time to be concerned about others. He recommended thinking of the words of the familiar hymn:
Have I done any good in the world today?
Have I helped anyone in need?
Have I cheered up the sad and made someone feel glad?
If not, I have failed indeed.
Has anyone’s burden been lighter today
Because I was willing to share?
Have the sick and the weary been helped on their way?
When they needed my help was I there?
There are chances for work all around just now,
Opportunities right in our way.
Do not let them pass by, saying, “Sometime I’ll try,”
But go and do something today.
’Tis noble of man to work and to give;
Love’s labor has merit alone.
Only he who does something helps others to live.
To God each good work will be known.
Then wake up and do something more
Than dream of your mansion above.
Doing good is a pleasure, a joy beyond measure,
A blessing of duty and love.
If we regularly step back and take time to consider and act on the needs of others, we will find that day by day, year by year, we will become more and more Christ-like. By regularly taking that small moment to think about and serve others, by and by we will hear the words of our savior, “Well done, thou good and faithful servant”.
