How God Speaks Through Prophets
I was asked to give a talk on, God speaks through prophets. The first thing I wondered when writing this talk was how does God speak through prophets?
With my dad, we talked about how Heavenly Father talks to the prophet. The way He does this is through revelation. In the Bible Dictionary the word revelation means to make known or uncover. The first way God speaks to Prophets is through dreams.
Dreams are when you are a sleep and you see something spiritual in your dreams. An example of this is Lehi’s dream when he dreamt about the tree of life.
Next thoughts that are confirmed by the Holy Ghost. This is when you are thinking about something and you feel the Holy Ghost say, that it is the right thing to do.
Hearing the voice of the Lord is the third way. This is when the Lord actually speaks words that you can hear that are true. An example of this when Samuel heard the Lord calling his name 3 times then being told by Eli that the next time he is called to answer yes, Lord.
After that is visitation. A visitation is when Heavenly Father and Jesus come and visit you so you can see and hear them speak. The best example of this is when Heavenly Father and Jesus came down and spoke to Joseph Smith and told him that none of the churches were true.
Lastly is a vision. A vision is when you are awake and you can see the things of the Lord. An example of this is Nephi’s vision that his father had dreamt about.
Revelation is not only given to the prophets but to us, too. In D&C section 1 verse 2, it states, “for verily the voice of the Lord is unto all men, and there is none to escape; and there is no eye that shall not see, neither ear that shall not hear, neither heart that shall not be penetrated.”
I would now like to talk about when the prophets receive revelation from God. The prophets are always receiving revelation from God when the people are being good and
Next I would like to talk about why does God speak through prophets. God speaks through prophets to tell us if something bad is going to happen. To help us get blessings. To give revelation that we should do something, like prepare for a flash flood. To help us come back to him and to help us help others to come back to him too. To warn us that Satan is going to try to trick us.
Revelation can help us learn and be happy. For example in D&C 42:61 it states: “If thou shalt ask, thou shalt receive revelation upon revelation, knowledge upon knowledge, that thou mayest know the mysteries and peaceable things – that which bringeth joy, that which bringeth life eternal.”
